The fisherman’s bench is a circular economy project designed to reuse the fishing nets that are thrown into the sea (“ghost nets”). Worldwide, one million tons of fishing nets that have exceeded their useful life are thrown into the sea every year. These fishing nets become a material that, due to its characteristics, is ideal for urban furniture.
The block-shaped material can be cut into bars of different sizes and replace the wooden bars of existing benches. Also, new casting structures can be ordered and completely new benches can be manufactured. There are three types of finishes depending on the color of the nets: green, blue and a mixture of both.
The material can be easily worked with woodworking tools such as CNC or jigsaws. To fix the panels to the structure, bolted joints are used as in the current benches.
We are an engineering studio based in Barcelona that develops circular economy projects and also for the traditional industry. Today we present our latest project: The fisherman’s bench.
The fisherman’s bench is a collaborative project with the company Gravity Wave, who are in charge of recovering fishing nets from the sea and transforming them into this material. We are very happy to do our bit in the much-needed transformation of the world towards a truly sustainable model that is committed to environmental conservation.
